Drumroll, Please

An acceptance speech

After a long campaign trail, countless stares, and the emotional labor of democracy, I am very, very tired.

I want to begin by thanking the voters, the academy, and everyone who believes that a good dog can still make a difference in a complicated world. Being chosen among so many strong contenders is an honor I do not take lightly.

This winning photo features me with my girlfriend, and I would especially like to thank her for her patience. She has undergone numerous operations, including the loss of her face and tail, just to remain by my side. That kind of devotion means everything to me.

This photo has been elected King of the World

I am told this picture is one of Cindy’s favorites. It’s the one she thinks we should print on velour and hang above the hearth, perhaps in a baroque or rococo frame. Possibly with gold spray paint. Maybe bronze. The exact finish is still under discussion.

What this result says to me about our people is that this year, what we want is intimacy and coziness. This image holds an inside world. It’s about being with those we love, paying attention to what actually matters.

The runner-up, our silver medalist, is the beautiful photo with flowers. It lives in a very different emotional register. That one is about pure joy, about the hopeful breeze of spring. It’s important to say that for most of the voting, these two were neck and neck. It was only in the very end that the cozy girlfriend picture pulled ahead.

In France this would become our vice-dog

So thank you for revealing yourselves.

And because I don’t want you to be bored by seeing the same images again, I have a real treat for you today. What follows is a video of me after a very long day at the river, learning to swim. I am almost asleep. You may recognize this general genre from my blinking video (here), or from the vacuum footage, which has now been watched for approximately 286 hours.

Thank you to all our supporters. I will continue to honor my campaign promises to eradicate all evil in the universe.

Sincerely,
Socks
